La Tomatina- A food fight on the Streets of Spain
La Tomatina de Buñol
If you want to experience a truly unique festival, La Tomatina is for you. This crazy festival takes place once a year in the town of Buñol, near to Valencia. What started off as the enthusiasm of a rebellious group of young boys in 1945; has now grown to be one of the biggest celebrations, for travellers, in the world.
People from all four corners of the globe gather every year to experience the extraordinary tradition of a huge tomato battle on the streets of Spain. The opportunity does not often arise where it is perfectly acceptable to throw thousands of squashed tomatoes at a group of 20,000 or more people in the beautiful streets of a quaint Spanish town. Prepare to get messy as more than 120 tonnes of tomatoes get offloaded from huge trucks into the waiting arms of the crowd. After the alarm sounds participants are free to hurl tomatoes at whomever and whatever they want- be ready to get completely drenched in tomato juice!
The battle is just one part of this historic festival, if you have the chance to come to this incredible celebration you will be sure to have plenty to keep you occupied with the festivities lasting all week.
