Summer in Valencia by Feetup Hostels

It’ summer and it’s time for one of the best things in Valencia – la horchata (orxata in Valencian, the local dialect). This refreshing non – alcoholic drink is one of the essential tricks to survive the hot Valencian summers.

Once the temperature has raised and reached the 20 degrees, all over the city pop up small mobile stands with nice and lovely ladies who are always willing to explain you all about this special drink.
La orchata is made of water, sugar and tiger nuts. It contains plenty of vitamins, phosphorus, and potassium. The tiger nuts itself can be eaten as snack, just like peanuts. The first references that exist about it date back to the 17th century. It was also well known in ancient Egypt.

One of the best places to try the orxata downtown is the “Horchatería Santa Catalina”, just by the Plaza de la Reina, a place that has two centuries of history already.
And, of course, we have to mention “La Horchatería Daniel” located in the small village outside of Valencia – Alboraia, the temple of the orxata in the region of Valencia, which is reachable by metro that takes not more than 20 minutes.  Lots of famous people from and outside of Spain, even the King of Spain, have visited “La Horchatería Daniel”, so now you know, - you can’t miss it!
