Vela de Santiago y Santa Ana - Sevilla 2011
This traditional celebration, dating from the thirteenth century, is celebrated every year in late July. That´s when many locals go to the 'other side' of the river to enjoy 6 days of festivities.
The festivities concentrate at the “Altozano” and its surroundings, where all kind of performances are held. The street Betis is an ideal place to stroll, have a beer or glass of wine with 'fried fish', or enjoy the traditional green hazelnuts.
The festival begins with the traditional opening speech at the Plaza del Altozano. The contest more representative of the festivities is the CucaƱa, a photo contest about the typical Seville´s life in July. The greasy pole is another highlight of the festival, installed in the bow of a ship on the Guadalquivir river, so many young people get through the wood to try to reach the trophy soapy (taking place every day from 18.00).
Many others competitions are held during the festival, such River Fishing Competition, a competition of ceramics, Parades, trophybowls, basketball, soccer, cycling, canoeing, handball, chess ... and many more activities gives great life to the neighborhood, until the last day, when amazing fireworks are displayed.
